Bridging the technical divide by helping low-wage families access home-based care

Due to the high infection rate of the coronavirus, patients no longer feel comfortable going to crowded public clinics. Patients are now seeking remote care options but are ill-equipped to access teleconsultation services. CheckUps Medical is bridging the digital divide and helping low-wage families to adopt to the new reality of home-based care.

CheckUps Medical is a leading provider of rapid outpatient care, that offers remote diagnostic services and pharmacy services to insured and self-funded organizations.

Before the Pandemic, CheckUps Medical offered remote medication delivery services to offices for insured patients.

The COVID-19 crisis has had two major effects on access to primary health care. Patients are no longer comfortable with going to crowded public clinics as a result of the risk of getting infected. Furthermore, even though there is an increased interest in remote care options, many are unaware or ill-equipped to access teleconsultation services.

CheckUps Medical bridges the digital divide and solves these two needs, thereby helping low-wage uninsured families to adopt to the new reality of home-based care.

CheckUps Medical has trained freelance motorbike riders with health mobilization skills to help the riders identify persons in need of medication or teleconsultation in remote areas. Once the rider identifies the persons need, they can facilitate teleconsultations with clinical staff. If the patient requires medication, the clinical staff can prescribe it and have the rider deliver it to the patient’s home. Alternatively, the rider can transport the patient to the clinic for care if an in-person visit is needed. This approach bridges the digital divide and helps low-wage families to adapt to the new reality of home-based care. The service is now available to insured and uninsured patients. They now have freelance riders who target specific estates and neighbourhoods.

CheckUps Medical have sensitized over 25 000 homes on telemedicine and medication delivery services. They have completed over 700 transactions, mostly delivering medicines so far. Their goal is to reach 100 000 homes by the end of 2020.

  • Business Strategy Development: to assist in structuring the business model of the program.
  • Advocacy: to create more advocacy on disparities related to access to telemedicine, especially for the elderly and less literate members of the society.
