Saving lives by enabling safe blood drives

Due to social distancing measures, blood drives in public spaces have been put on hold. However, the need for blood remains constant, which is why Haima Health Initiative came up with “social distancing blood drives” to provide a safe space for blood donors to donate to meet the growing need of blood banks in Nigeria.

Haima Health Initiative (HHI) aims to plug the blood supply gap for patients in Nigeria amongst blood donors, hospitals and patients in need of blood.

HHI is no longer able to carry out blood drives at University campuses, religious organisations and public events due to social distancing measures to reduce COVID-19.

Haima Health Initiative (HHI) created social distancing blood drives, hoping to create a safe place for donors to safely give blood during the pandemicthereby reducing the risk of contamination for all parties involved.

HHI will be providing transportation to donors from their homes and workplaces to blood banks in their local government for the rest of the year.

HHI is currently using the social distancing blood drives to supply 100 pints of blood to the National and Lagos state blood transfusion services every month. This is providing a lifesaving treatment for a range of patients including new mothers, new-borns, patients with cancer, sickle cell disease, road traffic and accident victims.

HHI is looking to raise the donations to 300 pints of blood by the end of the year.

They also hope to start supplying blood to plasma donors once the experimental research and trials to cure COVID-19 using plasma from blood begins.
